Most companies have started offering online versions of their services, and feedback about your online experience is just as valuable as understanding how you are treated when you visit their physical location. There are also a growing number of companies who conduct all of their business over the internet who benefit from collecting objective information about the ease of registration, ordering and navigating their website, or who can gain measurable results about delivery times and customer satisfaction through Online Mystery Shopping programs. When completing online shops, it is important to remember that you are a great representative of the average customer – regardless of your technical expertise. If you have difficulty with a site, chances are that others have experienced a similar issue. Behave as you would if you were a regular customer if you call into customer service (don’t indicate that you are a mystery shopper!) and report your experience when you complete your evaluation form. Nearly all companies that sell goods and services over the internet require payment with a credit or debit card. Reputable mystery shopping companies should only have clients who have secure sites, but it is important to protect yourself, so make sure that any site requesting your financial information is a secure site. The website address should start with https rather than http, and a small yellow lock should be visible in the bottom right corner of your screen. Read program instructions carefully to understand what services you are supposed to register for or purchase and what the reimbursement limits are. Since many online services are membership based, it is likely that you will also need to cancel your service within a specific timeframe in order to avoid non-reimbursed charges. Most clients are also interested in acquiring new customers, so if you like the service that you are testing, you can probably continue as a customer at your own expense. If you have any question about whether or not you are required to cancel, or about any other program details, it’s always best to double check with your scheduler or account manager. Finally, when completing your reports, follow all of the same principals that you would for any other mystery shop. Provide a response for every question – even if your answer is “Not applicable,” write 2-3 complete sentences with proper spelling, grammar and capitalization for each comment question, and provide your feedback in an objective and respectful manner.
